Modern rack cabinets are now the basis of the infrastructure of many test, measurement and simulation stations. They integrate power supply, control and measurement equipment, control systems and safety components in one place. In industrial and laboratory environments, they not only perform a mechanical function, but also become a key element responsible for the stability, safety and continuity of the entire system. Proper design of the power supply and safety systems in a rack cabinet has a direct impact on the reliability of tests, the start-up time of the station and compliance with applicable standards.
Challenges in powering test environments
The design and operation of modern test, measurement and simulation systems (HIL – Hardware-in-the-loop) involve a number of conflicting requirements. Engineers building 19” rack cabinets must balance high power density – often requiring three-phase power supply rated at 32 A or 63 A – with strict machinery safety standards. A key challenge is ensuring reliable power disconnection in emergency situations (Emergency Stop), which traditionally requires complex integration of separate components such as main switches, safety relays, contactors and power distribution units (PDUs).
Customers are looking for solutions that eliminate installation risks, shorten deployment time and ensure compliance with standards such as EN 60204-1. In response to these requirements, the nVent Schroff Rack Safety Plus (RSP) system was developed – an integrated power unit combining energy distribution with a certified safety system.

The nVent Schroff Rack Safety Plus system is available for purchase and individual configuration through ELTRON.
ELTRON is a long-standing authorized distributor of nVent Schroff products, whose solutions form the foundation of many modern systems meeting demanding technical and safety requirements across industry, IT infrastructure and specialized applications, including railway, aerospace and defense sectors. One of the latest solutions introduced to the portfolio is the Rack Safety Plus system.
Rack Safety Plus is an intelligent 19" PDU acting as a central power disconnect device with an integrated emergency stop system. The unit has been designed to ensure safe power supply for electrical and electronic equipment in industrial, laboratory and testing environments.
Rack Safety Plus – power module for Test & Measurement applications
Rack Safety Plus is an integrated PDU (Power Distribution Unit) designed for 19” rack cabinets, equipped with an emergency stop switch – either integrated into the module or implemented as an external device. The solution is primarily intended for Test & Measurement applications as well as laboratory and simulation environments.
The system can be fully configured online using the official nVent Schroff configurator:

The most important safety feature of the system is the integrated emergency button. When pressed, it immediately disconnects power from all AC and DC outputs (except dedicated service outlets). The system is based on a redundant safety relay with self-diagnostics, preventing restart in case of contact failure. A red ERROR LED indicates a fault condition (power contactor welding).
Standard solutions and engineering support
The nVent Schroff Rack Safety Plus system offers unique flexibility, allowing adaptation to virtually any test setup. To simplify the selection process, the manufacturer applies a dual-approach configuration concept.
In practice, ELTRON provides both fast ordering of standard versions and preparation of custom configurations tailored to specific test environments.

This collaboration stage enables precise definition of:
Technical parameters
The nVent Schroff Rack Safety Plus system features high current scalability. The latest versions support currents up to 32 A and 63 A (three-phase), requiring a 4U enclosure for the highest power variants, while standard versions (up to 32 A) fit within a 3U height.
The table below presents key technical parameters and supported standards:
| Parameter | Technical details |
|---|---|
| Input power | • Single-phase: 230 V AC (16 A) • Three-phase: 400 V AC (16 A, 32 A, 63 A) |
| Enclosure height | • 3 U (versions up to 32 A) – depth 547 mm • 4 U (63 A version) – depth 466 mm |
| AC outputs (Switched) | IEC 60320 (C13, C19 – locking option), Schuko (Type F), IEC 60309 industrial connectors |
| DC outputs (Option) | Integrated power supplies: • 24 V DC (350 W) • 5 V DC (32.5 W) / 12 V DC (54 W) – rear panel availability |
| Safety (E-Stop) | Integrated front button + connector for external emergency switches, including potential-free status relay contact (Emergency Status) |
| Compliance (Safety) | • EN 60947-5-1 (Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear) • EN 60204-1 (Safety of machinery – Electrical equipment of machines) |
| Compliance (General) | • DIN EN 61010-1 (Safety requirements for electrical measurement equipment) • CE and UL certification |
| Circuit protection | Circuit breakers (C-curve) for each line. Optional: RCD (30 mA), Surge protection device (Type 2), EMC filter. |
Equipment protection and power quality
Beyond operator safety, Rack Safety Plus also protects connected equipment. The system offers an optional inrush current limiter for 16 A versions, preventing fuse tripping when powering capacitive loads (designed specifically for capacitive loads up to 6000 µF, crucial when multiple switching power supplies are installed in a rack).
Additionally, “Service” outlets (not disconnected by the E-Stop) allow continuous power supply for critical controllers or PCs that must remain operational. They can also be used for cabinet lighting or service laptops.
Rack Safety Plus nVent Schroff is a comprehensive all-in-one solution that removes the complexity of designing power and safety systems from engineering teams.
Thanks to fast availability of catalog models and customized solutions configured directly by ELTRON engineers, the system is an ideal choice for any measurement or test environment, ensuring compliance with both European and global standards.
